Commonly asked questions

Q. Does the Boett Blanket really work?

A.  Most definitely, of the many thousands that are using the Boett worldwide, over 95% have reported that their horse has shown a rapid and often dramatic improvement.

Q. How quickly should I see results?

A.  As soon as the blanket is fitted and the midges can no longer bite you will start to see your horse relax. It can take up to 21 days for the dead and damaged skin cells to re-absorb, during this time your horse will continue to show a lesser degree of itchiness.

Q. How does the Boett work?

A. The Boett, unlike many copies, is made from a unique fabric and a clever design. The blanket acts as a barrier and stops midges from biting.  It is not impregnated with anything so there are no undesirable side effects often associated with chemicals. The blanket is easily maintained by machine washing and tumble drying, it is also easy to repair on a domestic sewing machine.

 Q. Will my horse overheat in hot weather?

 A. No, the Boett fabric is breathable. Veterinary test results show that horses wearing a Boett are cooler than their field companions exposed to the full sun.  Horses in Saudi Arabia, Australia and many other hot countries wear Boetts without any problems.

Q. When should my horse start/stop wearing his Boett Blanket?

A.  The blanket should be in place before the season starts, usually mid -February, but this does depend on where you live. Many horses now live in their Boetts throughout the year as the season gets longer.

Q. Is the Boett Blanket waterproof?

A. The Boett blanket is treated with a water and grease repellent during manufacture. The blanket will dry very quickly after rain, very much as their own coat would. If it was waterproof it would not allow moisture to pass through and would therefore make the horse sweat.

Q. In early spring/autumn can I place a rug over the the top of the Boett?

A. Yes, when it is still cold and wet many owners do so without any problems.

Q. Do I need to use a fly repellent or insecticide under the Blanket?

A. No, the Blanket will prevent bites wherever it covers.

Q. Can I ride in the Blanket?

A.  Yes, especially when it is midgey. Remove the hood and the belly-flap and loosen the rear leg straps to give more mobility.

Q. Should I allow for growth when I order for a young horse?

A. No. The Blanket needs to be a good fit. As long as you look after the blanket there is a very good secondhand market for them.

Q. Should I shampoo my horse on a regular basis.

A. Regular shampooing (weekly or fortnightly) can be beneficial, Ensure that you use a non allergenic shampoo and rinse thoroughly.
